How government funding works
The Australian government allocates funding to programs aimed at addressing skill shortages and building a competent workforce within the country. There are 14 government funding programs in operation across Australia, some designated for specific states and others implemented nationwide. Each program is tailored to different demographic groups, occupations, and qualifications. The nature of government funding varies based on the program and the specific training course being pursued. While some programs offer free training in high-demand areas, others provide subsidies for course fees, significantly reducing out-of-pocket expenses. It's crucial to familiarize yourself with the requirements of government-funded training before enrolling in a course, as there are strict eligibility criteria to fulfill. One of the prerequisites is selecting a course from a predetermined list of government-subsidized training programs, which varies from state to state. Once you've identified an approved education provider offering the selected course, you can proceed with confirming your eligibility and applying for the program.
Finding out if you’re eligible to study a government funded course
Eligibility for government funded courses can be a little complicated, and it differs from scheme to scheme. To make the process of checking your eligibility a little easier, we’ve outlined the eligibility requirements for each scheme. First, select the state you’re wanting to study in, and there you’ll find a list of relevant government funding schemes. Clicking on these will take you to a page with everything you need to know about eligibility. Eligibility criteria is often based on your citizenship, whether you’ve studied before (and what qualification you obtained), as well as your age and employment status. There are different schemes available for different groups of people (e.g. Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens and international students), so even if you’re not eligible for one scheme make sure to check the criteria of other schemes available in your state — you may be eligible for one of those.

Government Funded Courses in Victoria
If you meet the eligibility requirements, the government might cover the cost of your training course, either partially or completely. This payment is made directly to the training provider when you enroll, and it covers tuition fees. However, you may still be responsible for other expenses such as study materials, student services, and amenities fees. In Victoria, funding is available for a variety of vocational training courses, ranging from certificate III and certificate IVs to advanced diplomas. It also subsidizes accredited short courses (skill sets) for targeted upskilling and pre-apprenticeship pathway courses (certificate IIs). Government-funded courses are accessible across VIC, from downtown Melbourne to rural areas. These programs are open to Australian citizens and permanent residents, and some are also available to New Zealand citizens and asylum seekers. Eligible students can pursue government-funded courses online or at a campus in Melbourne, Victoria, offered by a TAFE institute or a private training provider. However, only certain training providers (or RTOs) are approved for subsidies, and only specific courses are eligible for funding. The remainder are fee-for-service, meaning that you or your employer are responsible for the entire cost.
